Rice
processing
- there are two displays in this exhibit. You will see
local women in traditional costume pounding the rice
by the ketungan method, which is the method used to
separate the rice from the husk for the making of steamed
or sticky rice; and the lesung method of flour sieving
for finer rice flour.
The making of traditional
offerings - visitors will observe the local women
and girls making two types of offering. This is a practice
traditionally undertaken by the women. The offerings
are made of young coconut leaves and there are many
types of offering, but they all serve the purpose of
honouring the Gods.
Preparation of Balinese
foods and cakes - guests will observe the preparation
and cooking of traditional satay meats (pork, chicken,
beef) and will be able to sample them. You will also
be able to see the process for making lak-lak, traditional
rice cakes.
Arak processing
- this traditional liquor is processed from the sap
of the stems of coconut flowers and coconut husks, which
are boiled together, and the steam is then collected
which turns in to the arak. This process uses a natural
fire which has to be constant but not flaming, and takes
one day for the process to be complete.
Balinese
Gambling and Cockfighting:
Gambling - visitors will observe a number of
traditional games that are used for gambling, including;
Kompiang, a game played with two square dice; Trui,
a game played with two rounded dice; Kocokmong, a game
played with three picture dice; and Bola Adil, a ball
game.
Cockfighting
- cockfights are a regular feature of temple ceremonies,
and are a combination of gambling, excitement, sport
and blood sacrifice. Men keep fighting
cocks as prized pets. Carefully groomed and cared for,
they are lovingly prepared for their brief moment of
glory or defeat. On quiet afternoons the men will often
meet at the banjar to compare their roosters, spar them
against one another and line up the odds for the next
big fight.
When
the festivals take place, the cocks are matched one
against another, a lethally sharp metal spur tied to
one leg, and then after being pushed together a couple
of times to stir up the blood, they are released and
the feathers fly. It is normally over very quickly.
After the fight, the successful betters collect their
payouts and the winning owner takes home the dead rooster
for his cooking pot.
Farming/Subak:
guests will learn about the process of planting and
growing rice, and about the irrigation organization
known as 'Subak'.
Ironsmith - a
display of how the local ironsmiths make tools for everyday
use and especially for farming, such as hoes, knives,
and machetes.
Livestock displays: housed at the plantation are cows,
used for both food and ceremonial purposes, pigs and
pigeons, which are used for racing competitions.
